Deadspace in Paediatric Anaesthetic Apparatus.

چکیده

The effective apparatus deadspace of the Magill, Potter and Cape Town gas circuits has been investigated using a model system simulating 3and 8-year-old children. (1) The Cape Town system is more suitable for smaller children. (2) The Potter system is more suitable for larger children. (3) A generous fresh gas flow will decrease the deadspace of the Potter and the Cape Town systems. A flow of double the minute volume is suggested. (4) There is no place for the Magill system in anaesthesia of children, and it might be better to supplant it with the Potter system in adults too.

An assessment of the Neff circulator.

THE PROBLEMS of eliminating expired carbon dioxide from anaesthetic circuits have excited the ingenuity of designers for many years. Carbon dioxide absorption systems, initially introduced in the form of "to-and-fro" circuits, produce an apparatus dead-space which tends to increase as the absorption material becomes exhausted. Means of circulating the gases through the absorber in order to redu...

Ventilatory Responses of Children to Changes in Deadspace Volume

Alveolar deadspace is greater during anaesthesia than in the conscious state (Nunn and Hill, 1960), and during spontaneous ventilation it increases with depth of anaesthesia (Kain, Panday and Nunn, 1969). However, although the additional influence of apparatus deadspace was investigated by Kain, Panday and Nunn (1969), few studies have considered the effects of apparatus deadspace on anaestheti...

Measurement of end-expiratory pressure during transtracheal high frequency jet ventilation for laryngoscopy.

An anaesthetic technique using high frequency jet ventilation has been proposed for direct laryngoscopy, but this may expose the patients to the risk of barotrauma. In order to assess this risk, we have measured end-expiratory airway pressure (EEP) through the injector using two three-way solenoid valves mounted in series. At the end of insufflation the first valve was switched off and the appa...

The effect of anaesthesia and intermittent positive pressure ventilation with different frequencies on the anatomical and alveolar deadspace.

Deadspace was measured in nine healthy subjects in the supine position, premedicated but awake and breathing spontaneously at a rate of 12 b.p.m. and subsequently under anaesthesia with artificial ventilation with frequencies of 12 and 24 b.p.m. The minute volume was kept at a relatively constant value. The physiological deadspace was calculated using the Bohr equation and the division into ana...

Small tidal volume ventilation using a zero deadspace tracheal tube.

The zero deadspace tracheal tube (ZEDS-TT) is a double-lumen endobronchial tube with a truncated bronchial limb. Functionally it is unrelated to the familiar endobronchial tube used in lung isolation surgery. It is placed in the same position as a regular tracheal tube and, by means of special connectors, one limb is used for inspiration and the other for expiration, thereby greatly reducing an...
